An Evanston Native, Thomas went to school through District 65 and graduated in 1996 from Evanston Township. He attended Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR graduating in 2000 with degrees in English Literature and German Studies.
It was in Portland that Thomas began his informal study of Yoga with friends and family. Upon returning to Evanston a year later Thomas was introduced to his teacher Sonia Sivakami Sumar. He began to study with her privately and attend her Yoga For the Special Child, Teacher Trainings. Soon thereafter, Thomas began teaching Sonia’s adult classes at her Evanston studio and assisting in the training programs. Since that time Thomas has been teaching Yoga and bringing his particular warmth, humor and generosity into public and private schools, colleges, day camps and regular studio classes.
A curious and intense student, Thomas seeks to inspire others to look beyond conditioned mental and physical limitations. As a compassionate teacher, Thomas encourages others to explore the limitless nature of the breath. It is through the breath that the integration of MindBodySoul is most readily possible and this meditative quality can be felt in his classes.
The practice of Hatha Yoga strengthens our ability to accept and love our current situation neither as a victim nor a dominating force; rather we can open to the fullest potential of the entire human being and move with the current of all existence. This is undoubtedly life affirming. It is habit forming and contagious. So, it is in this light that Thomas endeavors to share, through the practice, what he admires, trusts and loves about Yoga.
